The authorities in Shenyang, Liaoning province, will remake a public cemetery to house the remains of 437 Chinese soldiers killed in the Korean War that were returned to their motherland on Friday.

The Shenyang Cemetery for Revolutionary Martyrs was closed for preparatory work on Thursday.

The burial ground will be expanded with facilities sufficient to accommodate the remains of 900 soldiers who joined the Chinese People's Volunteers to fight side-by-side with the army of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the Korean War (1950-53).

Under the Shenyang government's reconstruction plan, all the remains of the 437 CPV soldiers returned by the Republic of Korea will be placed in the burial ground, and the other space will be reserved for more remains from possible future transfers.

The plan calls for a square to be built on the north side of the existing monument and all 210,000 CPV martyrs' names to be carved on a wall.

The tombs for the martyrs' remains are spacious, and the inside temperature will be kept constant, Legal Evening News reported, quoting Miao Wucai, a martyr's relative, on Friday.

about 100 CPV soldiers were interred at the cemetery, including three commanders, before Friday's transfer ceremony.
