北京时间2013年04月20日8时02分，四川省雅安市芦山县发生7.0级地震。据四川省民政厅4月21日11时30分统计，四川雅安、成都、眉山、自贡、德阳、绵阳、乐山、南充、宜宾、内江、资阳、甘孜、阿坝和凉山14个市州89个县150余万人受灾，179人死亡(其中雅安市164人，成都市8人，眉山市1人，德阳市2人，甘孜州3人，阿坝州1人)，24人失踪(全部在雅安市)，11492人受伤(其中重伤960人)。
目前，救援官兵已徒步挺进地震救援“孤岛”宝兴县，实现对当地所有受灾区域“全覆盖”。
宝兴县各类物资十分缺乏，据宝兴县县长马军介绍，全县水电气中断，房屋百分之百受损，包括汶川地震后重建的建筑。县里已经给受灾群众、学生发放过食物，但现在食品和水都不多了，道路不畅导致物资缺口，尤其是缺帐篷，很多人在露天过夜。
公安部交通管理局今日紧急提示，目前灾区道路部分路段出现交通拥堵，为保障救灾生命线的畅通，请公司企业和个人不要自行驾车前往灾区送物资。请社会车辆和广大群众尽量避免通行灾区道路，服从交通民警的指挥。
中央气象台21日发布未来三天全国天气预报，四川雅安地震灾区多阵雨天气。其中，22日夜间至24日有小到中雨；气温起伏不大，最低气温14～16℃，最高气温22～24℃。
震区多雨的天气状况，不仅对现场救援工作开展产生一定影响，更对灾民安置提出更多考验。同时专家也提醒，降雨还可能引发洪涝、山体滑坡、泥石流等次生灾害，需要预防气候产生的地质灾害。
据央视新闻微博消息，国土资源部40个专家组共300余位专家成员今日上午已到达地震灾区。40个组分赴雅安、眉山、乐山等受地震及余震影响的9个市36个县，展开地质灾害应急排查。
另经环境保护部等相关部门初步核实，芦山县境内无化工企业、尾矿库等重点环境隐患企业，饮用水源暂未受到破坏，在川核设施安全受控，辐射环境监测未见异常。
截至今日12时，四川雅安7.0级地震共记录到余震1339次，其中3级以上余震70次：5.0?5.9级3次，4.0?4.9级17次，3.0?3.9级50次，目前最大余震为5.3级。
中国抗震权威专家、中国工程院院士、广州大学工程抗震研究中心主任周福霖21日接受中新社专访时表示，有其他专家认为此次地震为主震—余震型，理由是主震7级，主震后又发生多次余震，但若为此类型，就意味着该地区接下来的余震不会超过7级，“但这一结论我不敢苟同，余震可能持续几十天，几个月，甚至几年都有，仍要继续观察。”
