Foreign ministry officials in Rome and Vienna have confirmed that two nationals listed on the manifest of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight were not on board but had had their passports stolen in Thailand.

Italy's Foreign Ministry said Saturday that an Italian man who was listed as being on the flight was traveling in Thailand. A foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed Italian reports that Luigi Maraldi had reported his passport stolen last August.

The Italian news agency ANSA says Maraldi called home after hearing reports that an Italian with his name was on the plane.

Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that another passenger was travelling with an Austrian passport that was also reported stolen two years ago in Thailand.
